Historique :	Saint Théophile, né à Corté le 30/10/1676 et mort le 19/05/1740, est canonisé le 29 juin 1930. Ce tableau réalisé pour la canonisation a été légué à la Corse par Pie XI. Il se trouvait à la cathédrale d'Ajaccio et la ville d'Ajaccio en a fait don à la commune de Corté en 1974.

Précision_sur la representation :	Le tableau relate l'intervention de saint Théophile auprès du Duc de Wurtenberg pour ses compatriotes, les chefs de la révolte. En effet, lors de la révolte de 1730, Gênes demande une aide à son suzerain l'empereur d'Autriche Charles VI. Au début de 1732, c'est le duc Frédéric Louis de Wurtenberg qui prend le commandement du corps expéditionnaire. La campagne se séroule du 17 avril au 9 mai date à laquelle Corté est prise.
